How Do I . . .

Look up Impact Factor

Impact Factor is a quantitative measure of the frequency with which the "average article" published in a given scholarly journal has been cited in a particular period. It is a measure of importance of scientific journals that is calculated each year by the Institute for Scientific Information, and published in the Journal Citation Report (JCR).

Impact Factors have a controversial influence on the way published scientific research is perceived and evaluated.

To find the Impact Factor of a certain journal, go to:
http://portal.isiknowledge.com/portal.cgi?SID=1CAdK8PaeJlPC2OIH27

Then click on GO:

JCR

There are two sections:

JCR Science Edition
JCR Social Sciences Edition

By default the first is selected, but you can change the selection.

On the right hand you have 3 options to select from:

View a group of journals by Subject Category
Search for a specific journal
View all journals

Select one of the above choices then follow screen directions.

Note: Remember that Impact Factor is calculated for only about 8,500 journals, so it could be that the journal you are looking for is not included. For more information and help please contact the Reference Librarian.
